Thousands of people gathered in Budapest's Deák Square for Jobbik's celebration of 23rd October. The demonstration was opened by the speech of Levente Murányi, a freedom fighter of 1956. Speaking to the mass of thousands, he said that the 1956 revolution had been fought for freedom and independence, and history had given Hungarians a chance.
The MP said that people need to vote for Jobbik to have the spirit of 1956 return to people.
János Stummer, the president of the Hungarian Spring Movement (a movement of young rightist intellectuals), also gave a speech. He said that there was no feeling more uplifting than to walk those streets of the Hungarian capital where the young boys of Budapest became the martyrs of freedom. He pointed out the similarities between 1956 and 2013 but he emphasized that the motive to leave Hungary for hundreds of thousands is based on economic reasons rather than political. Stummer believes that today's youth can restore the dignity of this nation: "Those who believe have the duty to fight."
Robert Winnicki, the president of the Polish National Movement also stepped on stage. He said it was a great honour for him to participate in this celebration and thanked Gábor Vona for the invitation. He pointed out that there was one nation in the heart of Europe that never succumbed to oppression, and that is Hungary, which is "carved of hard wood".
The Polish patriot said that October 1956 was a common memory for both nations who were jointly sending a message to our enemies that they "shall fall" no matter how much they try to conspire against us. He also spoke about the protection of the land, he said he was also aware of the problems since they had to fight against foreign land-grabbers in Poland as well. "The Hungarian land is not for sale, the Hungarian land belongs to the Hungarians, so protect your land!" - he called upon all participants. Winnicki also invited everybody to the Polish independence march of 11th November, where they would demonstrate for the common future of European nations. Finally, since his speech was in Polish, he finished it in Hungarian, exclaiming: "Only the nation!" It was later announced that the youth platforms of Jobbik and the Polish National Movement concluded an alliance, thus cementing their existing relationship.
Gábor Vona was welcomed to the stage by a long applause. Jobbik's president pointed out that he wasn't going to be hypocritical and pretend not to talk about politics on a national holiday. "You must talk about nothing but politics on 23rd October, you must compare the mission of 1956 with the current situation" - said Vona. The president of the party also compared the people of then and now, there were some in 1956 who were looking forward to the arrival of the tanks, others shaded their windows in their middle-class homes to stay out of trouble, and there was the third group of people who fought the tanks and carried the revolution to victory.
In 2006, a new generation was born, one that wants a real change of the political system and Jobbik means the political representation of these people. He said that the school report of Fidesz and the leftist parties was complete, and the summary of their grades is: "You should be ashamed of yourselves and get out of here!" Truth means abolishing political immunity, lifting confidentiality from the list of Communist collaborators and revealing dual citizens as well as political parties financed from abroad - said Vona and the audience cheered to express their agreement.
Jobbik's president also said that the two other large parties are only held together by their utter fear from each other. They can only be removed if we collaborate - he added. "What we want is not the power, but that Hungary belong to the Hungarians, and we want to keep it that way. We are not afraid for democracy, because we never really had it, we are afraid for the Hungarian people" - Jobbik's leader pointed out.
In spite of the critical situation, the party's president was optimistic since Jobbik had already demonstrated its ability to lead local governments. Hungarian youth showed an example in 1956, and history calls out to them again - Vona said, adding that he meant the youth with greying hair as well.
