Fidesz fears fall, Socialists fear annihilation, that's why they made a pact
Being afraid of falling from power and being annihilated respectively, Fidesz and the Socialist Party made a pact in Szeged, this is how Jobbik evaluated Viktor Orbán’s and László Botka’s meeting.
In his press conference on Monday, the opposition party’s spokesman István Apáti said the PM was afraid of falling out of power while the Socialist mayor feared that his party would cease to exist. Referring to Viktor Orbán’s own post-meeting account that a “substantial pact” was made, Mr Apáti emphasized that the most important clauses of the agreement were the ones that were not published.
He believes the contents of the secret pact can be deduced from the events coming up next. What already seems clear is that Fidesz “has given a break” to the Socialists and uses all its energy to attack Jobbik instead, he added.
“There is a Prime Minister whose recent steps have been driven by his fear of Jobbik and there is a leftist party which no longer has bank credit even,” Mr Apáti summarized the situation.
The politician suspects that the pact is designed to “keep the Socialist Party, which is swimming in a sea of debt in the billions, on a lifeline”. He noted that while Jobbik is accused by Fidesz of siding with the left, and by the left of siding with Fidesz, the reality is that the government is preparing for cooperation with the Socialists in order to prevent Jobbik’s success in the elections.
The spokesman says the leaders of both parties have committed so many crimes in the past thirty years that “it’s vital for them to cover it all up”.
He also talked about the situation unfolding in relation with weekly Vasárnapi Hírek and daily Népszava. As reported by Alfahír on Friday, sources say that the now merged papers can run government ads as long as they don’t publish fact-finding articles with inconvenient content for the government, and if they attack Jobbik much more vehemently then before.
In Mr Apáti’s view, this is part of a pact “aiming to ensure that Fidesz stays in power while the Socialists survive.” The politician believes the Socialist Party has given up all hope of winning the elections and “they can do nothing but extend their own political agony.” He also warned citizens that if they cast their ballots for any of the leftist parties in 2018, their votes would be lost and only increase Viktor Orbán’s chances.
