The real stakes are not just if Jobbik lives or dies

Speaking in front of the State Audit Office (SAO) building, János Volner declared that “our goal is to coordinate the efforts of the Hungarian nation so that we could stop this regime and prevent the final establishment of a dictatorship”.

In his Thursday press conference, Jobbik’s parliamentary faction leader said Fidesz had decided to financially annihilate Jobbik and prevent the party from running in the 2018 elections and that’s why the SAO imposed an unprecedented HUF 660 million fine on the opposition party. János Volner also noted that “just like the dictatorship in the 1950s, the SAO had not even bothered to explain the decision and inform Jobbik how the authority had calculated the amount of HUF 330 million, i.e., the alleged forbidden contribution for a political party.

“They just announced the final sum and that was the end of it!” the politician said.

According to Mr Volner however, Fidesz underestimated Hungarian citizens. In order to be able to run in the 2018 elections, Jobbik has launched a public campaign to collect donations and many people have realized that the affair is not just about Jobbik but “an increasingly dictatorial Fidesz government attempting to dismantle democracy and trying to prevent the largest opposition party from running in the elections”. The real stakes are not just if Jobbik lives or dies, “it is the fate of Hungarian democracy that will be decided now,” the faction leader asserted.

It is a telltale sign that some Fidesz-related journalists are now talking about how the successful fund-raising campaign scared Viktor Orbán and some government strategists are suggesting that Jobbik should be allowed to pay the fine after the elections. We want neither a favour nor any preferential treatment that might also be in line with Fidesz’ current interest to keep Viktor Orbán in power. What we want is real democratic institutions where the pillars of democracy are not provided by a “former Fidesz servant, an SAO president who shakes like a leaf” and similar figures, Mr Volner reacted. The faction leader concluded that “our goal is to coordinate the efforts of the Hungarian nation so that we could stop this regime and prevent the final establishment of a dictatorship”.
