Largest political assembly for 1956 : Jobbik, 23 October 2008
"We have to finish the transition that hasn't happened since 1989" said Gabor Vona, Chairman of Jobbik, Movement For a Better Hungary in his speech on 23 October 2008.
Jobbik and The Hungarian Guard held their 1956 commemorial demonstration that attracted 5-6000 people, making it the largest political event on the 52nd anniversary of the 1956 revolution."In the current situation, the most important question is that who will control the media, the land, the water and the energy supplies". "Jobbik's politics are based on 4 pillars; political representation, self-defence, ideology and economic background. We have the first 3 already but the economic background is still missing." Vona continued.
Gabor Vona, Jobbik Chairman also noted that the global financial crisis is a good opportunity to stand up and reorganise, unite Hungarians.
Dr. Krisztina Morvai, Jobbik's new EP candidate referred to unpopular PM Gyurcsany's scandalous speech in 2006, saying that "They lied in the morning, at noon and in the evening while stealing the nation's values. They shot or beat anyone questioning this".
Dr Morvai compared 1956 and today stating that the situation hasn't changed. In 2006 the Socialist-liberal government beat everybody who demonstrated against their politics and now they want national cooperation. In 1956, there was a national cooperation, without the communist murderers. "In the same way today, we can not cooperate and work together with thiefs and those blinding and beating people in 2006." Dr. Morvai added.
Levente Muranyi, 1956 veteran, Jobbik's Vice-President also compared 1956 to 2008. "In 2006 the Socialists humiliated and hurt 1956 veterans. In 2008 they denied to play MP Maria Wittner 1956 veteran's movie in the Parliament about 1956.
52 years ago students and young people's enthusiasm affected the Hungarian society's every level and the revolution was elementary powerful. It was a hot autumn in the middle of the cold war. The uprising swept away the communists in a matter of hours. The communist police and the Red Army was defeated by ill-equipped youngsters of Pest. On the 4th November the Soviet Red Army crushed the revolution with tanks and their elit troops. "
"Today, the same communists in power try to explain and define 1956 in the light of their interest." - Levente Muranyi continued. He mentioned 2006 when the communists and the inheritors of communist police celebrated the 50th anniversary with fireworks. They contravened the Constituion and Civil Liberties. There was no revolution in 2006 but there are political persecution and political prisoners. Muranyi finished his speech stating that Jobbik is the largest political party now outside the Parliament and Jobbik will shock neo-liberals and communists with their successful election results in 2010.
Special guest Nick Griffin, Chairman of the British National Party also made a comparison to 1956 and the political situation in Europe today. Mr Griffin saluted to the 1956 freedom fighters who were betrayed by the West. However, Hungarians in 1956 stopped the communist threat in Western Europe by bravely standing up against the Soviet dictature, exposing it's true face and methods. The West must be grateful for the 1956 Hungarian revolution, he added.
"Where is the ghost of Stalin?" Mr. Griffin asked. "It is in Brussel, in the EU." "The only difference is that what they did with tanks, now do it with banks. Nationalists in Europe must work and fight together against this tiranny". Finally, Mr Griffin said that Jobbik EP candidate Dr Morvai should be greeted in Brussels in 2009 by the noble Hungarian greeting that should be used by all European nationalists: Adjon az Isten [May God give you]! Szebb jovot! [Better future!] - the crowd replied.
Jobbik's event finished with no atrocities committed by Gyurcsany's police that was out in huge, intimidating numbers.
