Fidesz to eliminate opposition
Information has been leaked to the media about the possible scenarios Fidesz will utilize with the aim of crippling Jobbik’s parliamentary work and destroying the party for good.
A source speaking to the Hungarian news agency, “Hírszerző,” has further revealed Fidesz’s intense fear of engaging with Jobbik in open debate by confirming the parties intention not to do so. Behind the scenes however, the new party of government plans on being very active against the only democratic force likely to challenge its rule.
Not only are there plans to set up a database about Jobbik’s supporters, including both businesses and private individuals. But also, the purpose of this database it to deny such supporters the opportunity of applying for employment, public grants and loans; the intention being to purposefully discriminate against Jobbik voters until they are compelled to switch sides and support Fidesz if they wish to survive.
Also, Fidesz plans to use its political control of the Hungarian tax authorities (APEH) to scrutinize members of Jobbik in the hope of finding irregularities that in turn can be disseminated in the controlled media; another possible way of undermining Jobbik’s credibility amongst its supporters.
The source said that, “The time will come when Jobbik’s members of parliament will be knocking on our doors begging us to let them join Fidesz.” Fidesz's strategists are hoping that keeping Jobbik members under constant pressure will erode the party’s support amongst the population.
Fidesz also plans to accelerate its acquisition of Jobbik’s policies by introducing high-profile changes in law enforcement programs. (With what actual practical success remains of course to be seen.) Also, the party will speed up investigations against members of the former Socialist government in the hope that this will convince Jobbik sympathizers to jump ship and support Fidesz.
Fidesz expects that these measures will erode Jobbik’s electoral base, even as soon as the upcoming municipal elections scheduled for Autumn 2010.
Hírszerző also reported that another Fidesz politician, close to the national security services, was not convinced that the governing party should take such actions against the opposition. “When the Socialists did this to us we hated it, so we shouldn’t behave in the same way,” said the senior Fidesz source.
